the woman in black
there were several Gothic scenes in the play. i think the use of the fear and the way everyone closes up when the woman is mentioned creates mystery and fear about the hidden and the unknown, having an effect on the audience. one scene where the main character went to sleep, and total silence was left to built up the tension. the tension was broken after a long and painful pause by the character jumping in his sleep and screaming. this was effective because it was so simple, and thefear was created simply by the pause and the tension created.
